INTERVIEW WITH LEN WALKER, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF COUGAR ENERGY LIMITED (CXY)
“Advances Victorian Underground Coal Gasification Project”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/51677
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2008, 12:30 PM.
BRR Today Boardroom Radio speaks with Dr. Len Walker, the Managing Director of Cougar Energy. Welcome to Boardroomradio, Len.
10 CXY Thanks, Terrence. Good to talk to you.
BRR Len, Cougar has announced recently that it has completed the first stage of its Underground Coal Gasification project or UCG targeting vast brown coal resources in the Victoria. Could you give us an update on this announcement
15 and tell us a little bit what the first stage means of the UCG project?
CXY Yes, the Victorian project involves an agreement with the company called Victorian Coal Resources who have an extremely large brown coal lease of 1 million acres in the east of the Victoria near the Latrobe Valley. It has had an enormous amount of drilling many years ago by the State Electricity
20 Commission which has proven substantial open cut coal resources. The purpose of the agreement we have with Victoria Coal Resources is for us to look at the potential for deep coal seams over that area to be used for underground coal gasification.
25 The first stage of the project which has taken us a year essentially was to collect all the information that’s available on from deep drillholes of which there are only a limited amounts over much of the lease to establish where the deep coal seams existed but may be suitable. Our program of work defined that there are substantial areas which may be appropriate. They’re
30 really in two categories. The first area is the deep coal seam which is called the Traralgon seam exists further on shore towards the Latrobe Valley where it’s overlain by other coal seams and there were targets within that area. Secondly, there is also a very large area closer to the shoreline where the overlain coal seams don’t exist and we have a limestone area that’s quite
35 compact as the over burden material and in it’s in those areas where we think that UCG might be most appropriate and obviously we’d be looking to plan future programs drilling wood to test our beliefs.
BRR Then, just looking at some of the timeframes, can you just give us an
40 indication of what days could be?
CXY Having completed the first phase, unfortunately, in our area where we’ve quite this interest, there are very few drillholes. There are mainly some old petroleum wells, so our first requirement is to select areas where we do scout drilling program to get intersection as to show continuity at the coal seam. We
45 want to anticipate sometime early in the new year, maybe the first quarter in the new year to start a significant drilling campaign to get appropriate intersections to give us some idea of the magnitude of the coal resource that we may be able to access and also to enable us to find the specific area where we might want to start preliminary institute pilot gasification program, so the focus of the work in the field which started earlier in the new year.
BRR Len, thanks very much for the update today on the coal gasification project in
5 Victoria.
CXY Thank you, Terrence.
