INTERVIEW WITH KEVIN WILLS, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF FLINDERS MINES (FMS)
“Major New Phosphate Search in South Australia”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/50473
FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2008, 03:15 PM.
BRR Today, Boardroom Radio welcomes Dr. Kevin Wills, the Managing Director of Flinders Mines. Kevin, great to have you on Boardroom Radio.
FMS Hi, Joel.
10
BRR You’ve announced the phosphate exploration program in South Australia, first of, could you tell our listeners what you have planned?
FMS Well, we’ve been looking into the phosphate mineralization on the ground. We’ve got the industrial mineral rights too in South Australia for sometime
15 and in fact, we did a deal with some small phosphate miners a couple of years ago. But more recently, we’ve had an expert in industrial minerals called Peter Johnson, do a study on the potential for us and he’s come out with the conclusion that we’ve got a surprising number of occurrences in old mines as phosphate in our areas and we should be doing something about it.
20 So we’ve made a decision to do that and launched a new exploration program.
BRR Now, for further clearance within this area are reasonably well-documented, why is it that no one else has started mining it Kevin?
25 FMS Well, that’s a good question. I can’t really answer it. I mean, there has been about a total production in South Australia of half a million tonnes, historically, so there have been small mining operations. but there’s always been cheaper phosphate available from other places overseas, particularly in Guano-type phosphate from Oceanic Islands and a more recently, from Queensland
30 phosphate up in the Georgia in a basin in Queensland. So I think that’s the main reason but our thoughts are that we’ve gotten technology and so on that we should have a good look at these. We don’t believe anyone has actually done any modern exploration on these areas which are quite extensive and until you do, you just never know what you’re going to find.
35
BRR And of course our listeners will be well aware that the price of phosphate is undergoing some dramatic price increases in the past 12 to 14 months and that seems to continue to rise in the future.
FMS Well yes, I think in recent times gone up from $200 a tonne to over $400 a
40 tonne, so just looking pretty healthy at the moment.
BRR Finally Kevin, what are the exploration plans that you are putting in place?
FMS Yes, well we’re pretty confident because the phosphate is really part of the rock and if we collect them, saw some….analyse them for phosphorous and
45 associated elements that we’d be able to tell from the soils where the best deposits of phosphorous are in the ground. So once we’ve done that soil sampling, we’ll then go in and drill, probably reverse circulation drill holes underneath the best anomalies and see what sort of intersections we get. If we get things that look interesting, we’ll do a bit of metallurgical work to make sure we could recover the phosphate and if looks interesting continue to drill them out and see if we can find the resource. What we’re trying to find is a minimum of about 10 million tonnes, we think that’s what’s needed to have an operation and we’ve decided to create a new subsidiary to Flinders Mines,
5 this is going to be called Flinders Minerals so that we could put it in a separate subsidiary to do this work.
BRR That all sounds very encouraging. Thanks for your time today, Kevin and thank you for talking to Boardroom Radio
10 FMS Thanks, Joel.
