INTERVIEW WITH LEN WALKER, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF COUGAR ENERGY LIMITED (CXY)
“Cougar Expands Its Queensland Coal Exploration With New Lease”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/49384
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2008, 2:00 PM.
BRR Good afternoon and welcome to Boardroom Radio. Today, we are speaking with Dr. Len Walker, Managing Director and CEO of Cougar Energy Limited.
10 Thanks for joining us today, Len.
CXY It is my pleasure, Eddie.
BRR Len, we read publicity about conflict between UCG and coal seam gas leases in Queensland. What is Cougar’s position on this?
15 CXY Well, Eddie, the problem arises in situations where coal seams have significant free methane in them which exists in the Surat Basin in Queensland, and coal seam gas producers wish to recover the gas and mining companies or UCG companies such as ours wish to convert the coal into gas and bring it to the surface and we recover methane as well. Coal
20 seam gas people work under the Petroleum Act and we work under the Mines Act. So there is a conflict between the two types of technologies where they overlie each other. Our position is compounded somewhat because when we convert all of the coal into gas as we do with underground gasification, we require far less area than the coal seam gas people do for the same amount
25 of production. So the coal seam gas people need something like 15 times the area on their lease compared to what we do. So there is a definite conflict in the general sense. The state government has set up an interdepartmental working group to resolve specific situations where there are problems and we are working actively with them to achieve that. But probably more importantly,
30 our Kingaroy Project which is our main priority is actually free from any overlying petroleum tenements. There is no interest in coal seam gas on our tenement and so we are free from this conflict, and as far as we are concerned, despite the publicity, it is business as usual and we have no indications from the Queensland government of anything other than we
35 should continue in the way that we have been in the past.
BRR Len, there have also been some suggestions on possible environmental impacts of the UCG process on groundwater. Is this a fair comment?
CXY Well, it is not particularly fair, no. Underground coal gasification is effectively
40 a mining process, and with any mining process, there are difficulties that may be encountered if the proper approaches and technologies are not utilized. For example, underground mining can lead to deaths underground, but there are procedures adopted to make sure that this does not occur. With underground coal gasification and the groundwater, there are specific
45 investigation procedures and operating procedures underground whereby any impacts on the groundwater are not created. We consider in Cougar that we have a technical team that is the most experienced historically in terms of its background as any group in Australia and we are adopting the highest standards of technical excellence in our investigation and operations. There are a number of operations that have been proven in Queensland, Wyoming, and now in South Africa where proper procedures create no difficulties in terms of potential contamination and that is what we would expect in our future operations.

BRR Len, just finally, we see Cougar has been granted a new exploration permit in Queensland. Whereabouts is this?
CXY Our new lease EPC1118 is actually in the Surat Basin. It is relatively free from overlying tenements as well. It is in an area where the Macalister Seam,
10 which is the focus of mine interest for UCG operations in the Surat Basin, is at a depth that is of interest to us. We have a fairly large tenement. We are planning to start drilling in September and we look forward to endeavouring to establish a sizable resource there for future development.
15 BRR Len, thank you very much for your time today. We look forward to speaking to you soon.
CXY Thank you very much, Eddie.
BRR That was Dr. Len Walker, Managing Director and CEO of Cougar Energy
