INTERVIEW WITH NEIL EVANS,MEDIA CHIEF AND POLITICAL ANALYST, CENTREBET INTERNATIONAL LIMITED (CIL)
“Olympic Games Tips”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/49358
TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2008, 2:35 PM
BRR Hello and welcome to Boardroom Radio. Today, it's my great pleasure to be joined by Neil Evans from Centrebet. Welcome, Neil.
10 CIL Hello, John.
BRR Okay, we've got the Olympic games going on. I mean, it is absolutely like pulling teeth as far as I'm concerned watching the Olympic games. In a beat to make them watchable, enjoyable, have you got some ways that we may be
15 able to make a little bit of money while this ridiculous athletics carnival is going on and distracting everybody.
CIL Yes.
BRR What have we got?
20 CIL Well, it is a great medium to bet in the Olympic games because there's a gold medal market everywhere you look, and to make it tantalizing, trying to set markets on those lesser events. I saw some judo the other night.
BRR Tell me it wasn't just a couple of ladies in their dressing gowns having a
25 rumble on the couch.
CIL Exactly, I mean I think if you go to any women's college, you'll see a couple of girls in their pajamas having a roll around and I couldn't work out that one. Even with three cups of coffee and I still couldn't work it out, but, anyway, there's a market on that as well but for the more serious part, of course,
30 swimming is top of the three at the moment. Look, most part is (inaudible) (00:01:00) stuck up pretty well in the blue ribbon event although having said that, we have seen a few upsets and a couple of the fancied American swimmers who look a little bit off the boil, namely, Katie Hoff, of course, who prior to the game had huge reps. There has been some turnaround there. In
35 fact, we did have an overseas pander who unloaded on Natalie Coughlin, 100 meter backstroke. She was the early odds on favorite. She has been drifting out of market. She loaded up to the point of 30,000 Euros, A$50,000 at 2.25. An hour later, her main rival Kirsty Coventry came in and smashed the world record in the same event in the semi. So she's gone further. I’m sure she's
40 very nervous awaiting in the final and praying for massive turnaround the Americans' way so.
BRR This is 100-meter backstroke gold medal.
CIL Natalie Coughlin has burned out the 3.25 originally from 1.50. Just before the
45 semi she was 2.25 co-favored with Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe, who then comes out and obliterates the world record and has gone into 1.42 favorite for the gold medal. So the timing hasn't been (inaudible) (00:02:06) particularly when you're letting up to that degree so there's a little bit of that around. But, look, they're going through the market, they’re trying to do something here. We've seen some great swims by the Italian Federica Pellegrini in the 200 freestyle for women.
BRR That's mineral water, isn't it? You can bottle it.
5 CIL You can bottle it indeed. She's dominated the market. She’s in there at 1.75. I still think that's good value there. We've seen her main rival, Isakovic from Slovakia and Katie Hoff go out in the market, so Pellegrini, a tiptop swim in the load up event, 1.75, I think we can put her in. Let's have the Australian, yup. Pellegrini won 1.75, that's 2.03 for women. Moving down through the
10 markets, I think Libby Trickett, of course, she's already won gold in the 100 fly. Looking at her rivals, she's $1.47 in the freestyle, I think she'll win. We can put her in. It's not so much affected backing her but I've looked at the opposition, 4.75, the German girl, Kate Campbell the teenage schoolgirl from Brisbane back up at 7.50. There was a bit of money for her so that sort of
15 dropped off there so nothing really to beat Libby Trickett so I think we can put her in at 1.47 in the 100 free. Obviously, a lot of the short ones like Phelps and Liesel Jones are way too short, I mean, even the USA in the 4 by 200 freestyle for women at 1.84. So we're (cross talking) that will go around that.
20 BRR Can we follow this offshore pandering into the backstroke?
CIL It'll be a little low because Coughlin was the favorite. Now she's off the boil at the moment and Coventry is the real sensation of the game. She’s really in the pool but I think when you've got a genuine, I think it's still a genuine, you know, two-swimmer battle there. We're trying to look for the good things and
25 not get too sure so...
BRR You're the expert. I think we should probably give more comments about Penrith before last weekend, maybe we just focus on what you’ve got to say now.
30 CIL Well, if anyone exits, you can drop off the purse within five minutes, trust me, but we'll try and stay on it.
BRR What have we got here?
CIL The value...we're going to go with 100 meter freestyle for men (cross talking)
35 but we saw Eamon Sullivan break the world record in his leg of the relay.
BRR Let's get to the...what have got here....swimming men, hang on, buddy.
CIL The 100 meter freestyle gold medal.
40 BRR Yup.
CIL Eamon Sullivan $2.10.
BRR Yup.
CIL This shortened up from, I think, it was 2.65/2.70, so the money's really come
45 for him.
BRR Yeah, are you going to put him in?
CIL Yeah, put him in at $2.10. I think he's got Jason Lezak, the American, covered and Alain Bernard, of course, is the Frenchman who has lost his world record to Sullivan. Keep that (inaudible) (00:04:47) that he psychologically might have taken a blow, so Sullivan, of course, given the wonderful start by the ex-girlfriend that'll fire him up as well.
5 BRR Yeah, absolutely. I want to keep the magazine editors happy.
CIL And other reasons too, I'd imagine.
BRR Other reasons, yes.
CIL So I'd put him in $2.10 in the 100 freestyle gold as our third leg.
10
BRR Yup.
CIL And then it's a shortie but we'll put them in because they're absolute special. We got the women swimming the 4 by 100 medley relay team. That would be around the $4.10 mark medley.
15
BRR Okay, here we go, we've got the 4 by 100 medley, 4 x 200 freestyle.
CIL Yeah, you say 4 x 100 medley relay gold medal Australia in the women's is $1.10 and that's a (inaudible) (00:05:40) of course with Rice, Schipper, Leisel Jones. They're a hot team. They will win by space, $1.10 so much value but
20 we can put them in with confidence.
BRR And we can cheer patriotically.
CIL We can indeed. And I'd say that would be probably...I mean we could add others but they're pretty short. Well, we got 4 legs up there playing $5.94.
25
BRR Yeah.
CIL We can load up on that.
BRR We can load up on that so what we're going to do is we're going to back the
30 mineral water to win. We got Libby Tricket, the Aussie Eamon Sullivan and Australian girls with the 4 by 100 meter relay. Fantastic. Neil Evans from Centrebet, thank you very much and just the website again.
CIL Centrebet.com, as I mentioned earlier, a market on everything going on at the Olympics. We like to keep it exciting. Every gold medal event there's a market
35 there.
BRR Including the judo.
CIL Including everything, everything. The alphabetical is there, so everything. It's amazing how somehow we've managed to fill the market with some of these
40 events but we've done it.
BRR With the synchronized swimming outright, you've got the gold medal market here. Russia at $1.44. I mean, how much time are you spending watching that sort of stuff?
45 CIL Well, sadly quite a bit.
BRR Sadly quite a bit (cross talking)
CIL We're an international operation and you got to keep in mind that there's plenty of let's say professional Olympic pandering outfits underway on both sides of the world particularly over there in Europe with some of these lesser events. We don't give too (inaudible) (00:07:04) about them, but some of these places in Europe take it rather seriously and (inaudible) (00:07:08) so you can't afford to sort of go in a bit low and just think, well, no one will be
5 interested in this market because somewhere, sometime, someone will.
BRR Someone will know all that fencing and you'd be taken out in the...good on you, Evans, we look forward to speak with you throughout the rest of the Olympics.
10 CIL Yeah, we'll do that.
BRR Hopefully, turning it into a money making event for all.
CIL That's the plan. I look forward to it again very soon.
15 BRR Thanks, Neil.
CIL Okay.
