Index of Manufacturing
Manufacturing output decreased by 2.0 per cent in the three months to October 2008 compared with the three months to July 2008. Output decreased in 12 out of the 13 sub-sectors and increased in one sub-sector.
Within the widespread decreases in the latest three month on three month period, the most significant decreases in output were 4.6 per cent in the transport equipment industries, 3.4 per cent in the paper, printing and publishing industries and 2.6 per cent in the basic metal and metal products industries. There were no significant increases during the latest three month on three month period.
Total production output decreased by 1.8 per cent in the latest three month on three month period. There was a decrease in output of 0.7 per cent in the mining and quarrying sector and a decrease of 0.5 per cent in the energy supply sector. Within energy supply, output of the electricity supply industry decreased by 1.7 per cent during the latest three month on three month period. Within the mining and quarrying sector, there was an increase in oil and gas extraction of 0.1 per cent.
Between September and October, manufacturing output decreased by 1.4 per cent. Output decreased in ten of the 13 sub-sectors and increased in three sub-sectors during the latest month. Within the widespread decreases, the most significant decreases in output were 3.6 per cent in the paper, printing and publishing industries and 4.2 per cent in the basic metal and metal products industries and 2.8 per cent in the transport equipment industries. There was one significant increase in the latest month of 1.6 per cent in the chemicals and man-made fibres industries.
Total production output decreased by 1.7 per cent between September and October. Mining and quarrying output decreased by 7.3 per cent. Oil and gas production decreased by 7.6 per cent and energy supply output increased by 1.2 per cent. Increased demand for gas used in electricity generation and colder temperatures led to an increase in output of 3.6 per cent in gas supply. Electricity supply output increased by 0.1 per cent and water supply output increased by 2.0 per cent in the latest month.
Notes: Figures discussed are based on chained volume measures (ie, they have been adjusted for the effects of price change) and are seasonally adjusted.
Manufacturing consists of 14 sub-sectors listed below with the percentage of the total they account for. For IoP purposes DB and DC are combined as they are both small. The larger the percentage contribution, the more likely the impact on the overall growth rate will be significant.
DA - Food, drink & tobacco (14.8%) DB - Textiles & clothing (3.0%) DC - Leather & leather products (0.3%) DD - Wood & wood products (1.8%) DE - Paper, printing & publishing (13.7%) DF - Coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuels (1.6%) DG - Chemicals & man-made fibres (11.1%) DH - Rubber & plastic products (5.2%) DI - Non-metallic mineral products (3.7%) DJ - Basic metals & metal products (10.2%) DK - Machinery & equipment (8.4%) DL - Electrical & optical equipment (10.7%) DM - Transport equipment (11.0%) DN - Other manufacturing (4.4%)
