INTERVIEW WITH SZE WEE TAN, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ROCKEBY BIOMED LIMITED (RBY)
“Review of the 4th Quarter”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/48884
FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2008, 12:45 PM.
BRR Good morning and welcome to Boardroomradio. Today, we are speaking with Dr. Sze Wee Tan, Managing Director of Rockeby Biomed Limited. Thanks for
10 joining us today, Dr. Tan.
RBY Good morning, it's good to be on the interview again. Thank you.
BRR Dr. Tan, you had a very busy June quarter, would you give our listeners just an update and a review of the June quarter for Rockeby.
15 RBY Well, the June quarter kept the end of the financial 08 and during the quarter itself we have been very busy on a number of fronts. This is actually understandable as we diversified the company's product portfolio from slowly and rapid diagnostics and to nutritional health lifestyle product which is Pepp. I think that the diversification efforts have started to get traction as well in this
20 quarter and will continue to move with very high momentum into the new year which ought to get more elaborate later on. During the quarter itself, I think, and also during the last financial year, we have seen that the seasonality of the bird flu in the world and also in the region has been very quiet in the first half of financial year 08 but has come back in the second half of FY08 and
25 this has translated in our sales of a lot of bird flu tests. As you can (inaudible) (00:01:35) with the recent order of over $200,000 worth of bird flu tests for the month of July. We see that this bird flu season for this year will be much more frequent than the previous year but this is something that we recognize from last year or last three years since we got involved in this bird flu testing
30 market. It’s a fact that it has seasonality major to it and what we have established is the credibility of our product performance and one of our product in the market so when the near outbreak occurs again, we get very fast and immediate orders for our tests from established distributors and also government tender agencies as well. At the moment itself, we're also involved
35 in a number of these tender agencies in Asia as well as the Middle East. So we do, therefore, find that FY08 will turn out to be a transition year as we diversify ourselves away from solely being a product development company focusing on rapid test into a more balanced company, healthcare development company, with both diagnostics and also with healthcare
40 products starting with Pepp.
BRR Thanks, Dr. Tan, and you briefly mentioned about some of your products as part of your product portfolio but could you give us an update on your products Pepp, Oraquick and Avian Flu.
45 RBY Yes, we started off Pepp with the launch in the end of financial year 07 in Singapore, and in the past 12 months itself, we have been able to promote Pepp actively in Singapore using it as a test bit for the product mix. In Singapore itself, we have fine-tuned the product, packaging, pricing and also the promotional mix. The uses of Pepp in Singapore are primarily the three groups of users or drinkers. The expert crowd and also now, we're targeting the young people especially those who are going to university or starting to get themselves exposed to drinking but we think they should be mindful or responsible drinking. Within these past 12 months itself, we also put in across
5 400 points of sale channels in Singapore including the pharmacies and (inaudible) (00:04:40) and 7-11. The uptake has been growing (inaudible) (00:04:42) over the last 12 months and awareness of the product is growing. We do see a very busy year-end season coming this year with the drinking and partying and I think I will do well. From Singapore itself, we've got
10 Sandoz China to be a partner for our role in China and we are actually very pleased with the performance of the product in the early uptake. We've done two shipments to China and Sandoz have actually increased the orders to us for the remaining of the year and we've announced this as we complete the shipment to them and in this quarter and the next. We've got momentum in
15 the uptake in China and I think the shareholders will be pleased to know that it definitely has good potential with the experiences in China itself, we are in the process of registration and preparation for launch in several other countries within this new financial year. With that coming in, we do see that time's going to contribute quite significantly towards financial year 09
20 revenue. Already financial year 09 order from Sandoz is a bit higher than financial year 08. The other products in our portfolio itself which is bird flu test itself will still contribute sales in this financial year 09 and they are, however, going to be moderated by seasonality also by tender so we are still (inaudible) (00:06:37) towards this coming FYs of bird flu market. As for the
25 other product in our portfolio which is Oraquick, this is a market that we’ve developing. In the past 12 months itself, we have increased the acceptance rule out and the use of the test in the professional doctors' market in Singapore which deals in over eighty clinics on a fee-for services by the patient. We're also in the process of introducing into the hospitals within this
30 new FY as well, so I think that these steps that we put in financial 08 in terms of new business activities and also our strategy for diversification will bear fruit in FY09.
BRR Thank you for those explanations there, Dr. Tan and just for our listeners, if
35 you can briefly touch on the outlook for the financial year 09 and what’s in store for Rockeby.
RBY Well, at this point in time, the company is actually quite optimistic about these prospects for financial year 09 due to the performance of its products in its portfolio. Of course, the company is managing its cash sales or its cash flow
40 prudently due to the very challenging capital markets for funding for its working capital. We have also disclosed that we have grants from the R&D grants given to us in Australia, then also, we have put in two grants in Singapore for the technology enterprise commercialization scheme which are worth up to S$750,000. I think that if the grant, we'll probably know the results
45 of the grants sometime within this FY and these are things that we are doing to continue to reduce our operating expenditure and working to increase our sales, and hopefully, to turn the company around in the near future.
BRR Alright, Dr. Tan, thank you very much for the insights there on the last quarter for Rockeby and what's happening in its future. I'm sure our listeners will appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time.
RBY Thank you very much, goodbye.
