INTERVIEW WITH DR. KEVIN WILLS, MANAGING DIRECTOR, FLINDERS MINES LIMITED (FMS)
“Iron Ore Exploration Now the Focus”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/48866
FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2008, 11:00 AM.
BRR This morning, Boardroom Radio welcomes Dr. Kevin Wills, the Managing Director of Flinders Mines. Kevin, thanks for joining us.
10 FMS Good morning, Cameron.
BRR Kevin, it has been another busy quarter for you. What were the highlights at Flinders Mines over the last quarter?
FMS Well, I think mainly we have really, I mentioned in the corporate section that it
15 was a watershed quarter because for the first time our expenditure on iron ore has actually exceeded that on diamonds and we expect that situation to continue for some time. So we have really been pushing to get our camp set up, our drilling going and all the approvals needed in the iron ore project in Hamersley in the Pilbara. That is what we have done and we are now drilling
20 away. I am pleased to be able to say that at least the first two exploration holes hit what looks like channel iron deposit mineralization. So we are very pleased to see that and I think that is the beginning of a very busy next quarter for us.
25 BRR Kevin, you said that, you mentioned that iron ore exploration is now exceeding that of the diamond exploration.
FMS That is true, yes.
BRR What is happening with your diamond exploration?
30 FMS Well, in diamonds we have got our two main projects such as the ones in the Flinders Ranges and the Gawler Craton and particularly in the Flinders Ranges we have had some encouraging results just north of a place called Eurelia which is the only place in South Australia which has actually got diamond therefore there is kimberlites. But just to the northwest of there
35 which is interestingly where our model predicts we might get better grades, we found a number, I think ten or more so far, of anomalies which we are sure from our previous work are going to be kimberlites so we are going to be able to trench them and get some samples of kimberlite to check for their diamond content. We will be planning to do that later in the year. The work on
40 the Gawler Craton has really been setting things up for another program. We are going to be doing some drilling in central parts of the Gawler Craton in the next quarter and we are looking forward to that.
BRR And, Kevin, during the quarter you picked up another tenement?
45 FMS Yes, in particular near Hamersley, we did a deal with (inaudible) (00:02:34) Resources and picked up an area called 471560. So far yet, we have not done much on it because we are waiting for our consultant, Dr. Richard Russell, to get back from overseas. He has been looking at iron ore in Mauritania in Western Africa. When he gets back, he is going to have a look at it and will come out with some, what we think the target potential for channel iron deposits is on that ground but we are pretty confident there is some there but at this stage we are waiting for Richard to come back and let us know. If I could just talk a bit about the future program this quarter,
5 Cameron. In particular, in the Hamersley project we are planning to spend $2.5 million this quarter that is up to the end of September. Next week we have got two more drill rigs arriving so we are really going to start pushing things. The camp is nearly complete now so everything, I think there is probably another one or two weeks that everything should be running
10 smoothly and we are hoping to significantly increase the data output. Of course, we will also be reporting on that as things go.
BRR Yeah, it sounds like a busy period and you have got enough cash in the bank anyway to take you over the next few quarters, in fact.
15 FMS I think so yes, looking pretty good there.
BRR It is a good environment to have a lot of cash. We will follow you with interest there at Flinders Mines as you get the other couple of drill rigs going and report back some more results.
20 FMS Thanks, Cameron.
BRR That has been Dr. Kevin Wills, the Managing Director of Flinders Mines, giving us an update on Boardroom Radio. I should point out that listeners are able to ask Dr. Kevin Wills a question through the webcast which we will then
25 send to Kevin to be answered at a later stage.
