INTERVIEW WITH MIKE TURBOTT, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF AUSTPAC RESOURCES NL (APG)
“Finishing Construction and Started Commissioning Stage 2”
http://www.brr.com.au/event/48043
THURSDAY, JULY 24, 2008, 10:30 AM.
BRR Today Boardroom Radio speaks with the Managing Director of Austpac Resources, Mr. Michael Turbott. Welcome to Boardroom Radio, Michael.
10 APG Well, it is great to be back.
BRR Mike, Austpac Resources’ latest announcement says that the stage 1 roasting campaign at your ERMS Synrutile Demonstration Plant is now complete. What does this actually mean?
15 APG Well, as many of your listeners will know, it is really a culmination of years of work spent developing and pilot testing our ERMS Synrutile process. That is the process that operates ilmenite into a product that will be used to make titanium dioxide pigment or titanium metal. However, we recognized that we needed to show that our technologies work as a unit and so we decided to
20 build the 3000-tonne Synrutile Demonstration Plant in Newcastle and run it for a sufficient time to prove everything works. We built the plant in two stages. Stage 1 involved roasting the ilmenite to condition it for leaching. We started roasting in March this year and we have now processed over 720 tonnes of ilmenite concentrate from different deposits around the world. So
25 we proved the ERMS SR roasting on a large scale. No matter the type of feed concentrate, our team was able to treat the plant to ensure that we produced the roasted ilmenite specification. Then, bench-scale leaching of these ilmenites produced the normal ultra high grade ERMS Synrutile. So, we are confident that our bulk products will be the best in the world.
30
BRR Mike, you are finishing construction and have started commissioning stage 2 of your plant. What exactly is being done in stage 2?
APG Well, stage 2 is the production end of the plant. The roasted ilmenite is leached with hydrochloric acid in our patented continuous leach vessel and
35 that produces the ultra high grade synrutile which contains over 97% TiO2. The acid leaching removes almost all the iron from the ilmenite in the form of iron chloride. Then, the iron chloride is processed through our patented EARS section of the plant to produce fresh acid and iron metal pellets. The acid goes back to the leach section. The iron, of course, is high value. It is a direct
40 reduced iron or DRI, which is a premium material for steelmaking. It is the iron, the DRI, which gives us a real advantage over our competitors. We are the only continuous synrutile process so it is more cost effective and we produce two high-value products. We will not throw the iron away like the other synrutile processes. We will sell it.
45
BRR Mike, your announcement says that you will be commissioning part of your plant using steel waste?
APG Yes, we will use spent pickle liquor from a steel mill to commission the EARS acid regeneration section to produce sufficient acid to start leaching ilmenite. From then on, we will continue regenerating the acid from our own chloride-rich spent leach liquors. We also found some time ago we could add steel mill waste to the process and markedly increase the yield of the saleable iron. These wastes will include mill scale and electric arc furnace dust, they are
5 normally discarded. Once the plant has settled down, we then add these materials to the EARS section and so it generates more iron. So we will prove we are not only eco-friendly, but we are also able to create considerable revenue through waste treatment.
10 BRR You do seem to have a lot of environmentally friendly initiatives associated with your process. Also, I note that you have even installed a CO2 absorption system.
APG Yes, for sure. It is all a matter of optimisation to ensure we can get all we can out of our process while we maximise the environmental aspects. We actually
15 will capture over half of the CO2 produced by EARS process and that captured CO2 is extremely pure and so it could be sold for other industrial uses. Use in soft drinks is one example. We have focused on being environmentally friendly while staying cost effective and I really think we have done that.
20
BRR Mike, it sure sounds like it puts you in a good place for the future. Now, speaking of the future in the short term, what do you see for Austpac Resources down the track?
APG Well, we will start producing synrutile and iron late next month, and the
25 operations will all be finished by September. The products are going to be sold to prospective long-term customers for market trials. Then, on the fourth quarter, we will be starting our feasibility for the first commercial ERMS SR plant. We envisage that plant is going to produce 60,000 tonnes of high grade synrutile and maybe a similar amount of iron, depending on how much steel
30 waste we decide to add. By October, we will have a proven synrutile process, a proven method for treating steel mill wastes and a proven DRI process. We are even looking at running the EARS section of the plant to recycle steel mill waste before the end of the year and so it generates some revenue. So, yes, we are really in great shape and our future, I believe, looks very rosy and
35 certainly our long wait has been well worthwhile.
BRR Mike, thanks very much for the update today on the demonstration plant and we do look forward to further news in this quarter.
APG Well, thanks very much, Terence. I will talk to you soon.
