Manufacturing: 1.3% three-monthly fall
Index of Manufacturing
Manufacturing output decreased by 1.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2008 compared with the second quarter of 2008. Output decreased in 11 out of the 13 sub-sectors and increased in two sub-sectors.
Within the widespread decreases in the latest quarter, the most significant decreases in output were 2.6 per cent in the electrical and optical equipment industries, 2.3 per cent in the transport equipment industries and 1.7 per cent in the paper, printing and publishing industries. There were no significant increases during the quarter.
Total production output decreased by 1.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2008. There was a decrease in output of 0.6 per cent in the mining and quarrying sector and a decrease of 0.3 per cent in the energy supply sector. Within energy supply, output of the electricity supply industry decreased by 1.5 per cent during the quarter. Within the mining and quarrying sector, there was a decrease in oil and gas extraction of 0.3 per cent following planned maintenance work in the oil industry during July and August.
Between August and September, manufacturing output decreased by 0.8 per cent. Output decreased in ten of the 13 sub-sectors and increased in three sub-sectors during the latest month. Within the widespread decreases, the most significant decreases in output were 1.8 per cent in the transport equipment industries, 1.7 per cent in the chemicals and man-made fibres industries and 1.3 per cent in the paper, printing and publishing industries. There were no significant increases in the latest month.
Total production output decreased by 0.2 per cent between August and September. Mining and quarrying output increased by 7.0 per cent. Oil and gas production increased by 9.3 per cent with the end of the planned maintenance season. Energy supply output decreased by 1.5 per cent with a decrease in output of 1.6 per cent in electricity supply. Increased demand for gas used in electricity generation continued during September due to maintenance work being undertaken at power stations which are not gas fired. Gas supply output decreased by 1.3 per cent and water supply output decreased by 1.4 per cent in the latest month.
Notes: Figures discussed are based on chained volume measures (ie, they have been adjusted for the effects of price change) and are seasonally adjusted.
Manufacturing consists of 14 sub-sectors listed below with the percentage of the total they account for. For IoP purposes DB and DC are combined as they are both small. The larger the percentage contribution, the more likely the impact on the overall growth rate will be significant.
DA - Food, drink & tobacco (14.8%) DB - Textiles & clothing (3.0%) DC - Leather & leather products (0.3%) DD - Wood & wood products (1.8%) DE - Paper, printing & publishing (13.7%) DF - Coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuels (1.6%) DG - Chemicals & man-made fibres (11.1%) DH - Rubber & plastic products (5.2%) DI - Non-metallic mineral products (3.7%) DJ - Basic metals & metal products (10.2%) DK - Machinery & equipment (8.4%) DL - Electrical & optical equipment (10.7%) DM - Transport equipment (11.0%) DN - Other manufacturing (4.4%)
